This book is a compilation of enslaved persons being brought into Georgia that were registered with the Richmond County court. The index abstracts information on the over 21,000 enslaved persons that were mentioned in the Richmond County Superior Court Slave Importation Affidavit Register ledger books from 1818 to 1854. By law, owners of enslaved persons being brought into Georgia were required to register their slaves with the Superior Court.
This compilation of abstracted ledger books, providing both the enslaved and the owner’s names, is 822 pages. Click here to see a sample page. This compilation contains records many of the enslaved who were associated with the Augusta, Georgia area. The index abstracts information on 15,733 persons, who were mentioned as slaves in the Richmond County books of estate, guardian, and trust accounts. The original records are reports to the court of inventories and appraisements of the assets of these estates and how they were dispersed. In many instances, assets were distributed to heirs of the deceased; and their names are also included in the reports to the courts.
