Pauper Burial Records 1870 to 1873
In the 1800s, like today, no everyone had the financial means to pay to be buried. In the most difficult cases, the deceased’s body remains unclaimed until a local government intervenes to arrange an indigent burial —historically known as a “pauper’s burial.”. In Richmond County in the 1870s, the Richmond County Ordinary Court would be involved and as part of that process, a burial form was generated.
AGS has published an index to these records. The information in this index was abstracted from Richmond County, GA Ordinary Court pauper burial forms from 1870 to 1873. The index lists the names of 469 paupers that were processed by the court during that time. The index is part of the AGS collection and can be viewed at its Adamson Library during normal business hours or by appointment.
The forms may also be viewed at the Augusta Genealogical Society Adamson library. These documents are part of the AGS Special Collections and those wishing to view the forms will need to call to make a special appointment with the chairperson of the Historical Documents Committee.
Copies of an individual form can be provided upon request. There is a token cost per page to cover handling fee, plus shipping cost. Please contact AGS for details.
