Join us for a day long webinar with Diane L. Richard and honoring our female ancestors as we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment.
The Augusta Genealogical Society is happy to announce that our 2020 Annual Symposium has been refashioned for distance-learning. We know that many of you were looking forward to the in-person experience AGS has offered for over 40 years. However, with the state of the pandemic, and in the interest of our many volunteers and guests, we feel the safest choice is to carry on virtually. Enjoy this live event from the comfort of your home.
Topics for the day will be as follows:
The Story of Rachel: A female slave with 2 children who was finally manumitted about 1800 after 20 years of court cases. The story includes Rachel those involved (mostly 2 daughters of Rachel’s former owner).
Born in NC & Living Elsewhere: Making the Connection Back: Some rules of thumb and strategies for research into NC individuals to determine where in NC they came from. Also shared will be a select list of NC records that are key to this type of research with a discussion on what makes them so invaluable.
Women in Ledgers/Geography, Politics, Religion & More: Many women are listed in these records – crossing a toll bridge, getting merchandise at the general store, being attended to by a physician, and P.O. records.
On the Road Again: Are Your Ancestors Hiding in Road Records? Roads were built and maintained by the local community; thus, the members of the road crews were appointed by the county court. The records of these crews and the work they performed include details about your ancestor as well as the FAN Club (friends, associates, neighbors) working with them.

Diane L Richard has M.Eng. and M.B.A. degrees from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. She has been doing genealogy research since 1987 and since 2004 professionally focused on the records of North Carolina, other Southern States and migration paths to the Mississippi River. Since 2006 she has authored almost 300 articles on genealogical topics for a variety of publications including Internet Genealogy and Your Genealogy Today (formerly Family Chronicle). From 2010-2017, Diane served as the editor of Upfront with NGS, the blog of the National Genealogical Society publishing over 2000 posts. She is current editor of the North Carolina Genealogical Society Journal and past editor of Wake Treasures, the journal of the Wake County Genealogical Society retiring in 2019 after unknown number of years at the helm! She is a member of the national and local chapters of the Association of Professional Genealogists and the National Genealogical Society.
